Chittorgarh: a saga of Rajput pride, valour and sacrifice….
Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site since 2013 is an iconic expression
of Rajput pride and valour. The sprawling fort
spread over 700 acres with its seven entrances
(pols), multiple palaces umpteen number of
temples and kunds, talabs and baolis also
houses the Vijay Stambh and Jauhar Sthal.
Vijay Stambh, one of the finest examples of
Rajput architecture was built by Rana Kumbh to
commemorate his victory over Mahmud Khilji of
Malwa in the Battle of Sarangpur. Vijay Stambh is
a nine storeyed tower & a proud monument
standing tall for centuries telling tales of Rajput
bravery. Adorned with sculptures of Jain Gods
and Arabic inscriptions, many believe Vijay
Stambha symbolizes religious pluralism
practiced by Rana Kumbha.
A plaque “Jauhar Sthal” chronicles Jauhar – a
practice where women and girls would immolate
themselves alive, rather than face the prospect of
being taken captive by enemy. The history
testifies that “Jauhar” was committed atleast
thrice in Chittorgarh - when brave women of
Mewar sacrificed their lives in the burning pyres.
The place that captures Vijay Stambh & Jauhar
Sthal in the same frame is a proud yet
melancholic reminder that valour and courage
has many expressions. The history of Mewar may
not be that of triumph always, but is always a tale
of unparalleled courage. In Vijay Stambh and
Jauhar Sthal, the legacy of Rajput honour, valour
and sacrifice lives on.
